Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
