Morgan Rogers' Golden Spell Drives Aston Villa's Improbable Championship Bid

Just 60 days ago when the young forward stood on the Sunderland turf, appearing bewildered as Unai Emery scolded him over missing a pass in behind. During that period, as the club went six without a win, it wasn't clear if Rogers' form were an indicator or the source for the side's broader struggles.

“As Rogers swept in his second… Emery ripped off his thick padded coat, spread his arms and roared.”

The Sideline Explosion of Elation

In the latest match, though, the sideline response was entirely decidedly more positive. After the in-form star drilled in his brace-sealing goal to reinstate Villa's lead, the boss discarded his coat, spread his arms and shouted in triumph. The team were on their way to a 10th successive win and after failing to win their opening six games, find themselves a mere three points behind table-toppers Arsenal.

Is Aston Villa Serious Hopefuls?

That’s a particularly tough proposition to answer. The historical record, the perceived status of Villa, suggests not. Furthermore, their performances haven't been entirely convincing in many games, even as the victories have accumulated.

As per statistical analysis, in only two games has the side posted an xG more than 0.5 greater than their opponents. For a side which has just won ten consecutive victories, the Villans appear curiously susceptible – however currently the tight outcomes are falling their way.

The Reliant Strategy

Their recent policy appears to be to exchange chances with the opposition before hoping Rogers to bail them out with some crisp finishes. This occurred against Leeds, it occurred against West Ham, and it happened against the Red Devils.

His opener came from a brilliant finish, arced right inside the post from the corner of the box. The follow-up goal proved to be a slight scruffier version of the opener capitalizing on a setup by his strike partner.

“Much like Robben with his left, Rogers’ right foot has become a known threat that remains brutally unstoppable, regardless of anticipation.”

A Formidable Weapon

How Long Can This Continue?

Logic says not. Against United, the opposition registered a greater number of attempts and more direct attempts. They have triumphed in eight consecutive games by a single goal. The defence has been breached in all except one of those matches.

Regression to the mean could be the most significant challenge Villa must confront in the near future. Rogers, almost certainly, will not continue to blasting his shots into the top corner forever.

Potential for Growth

Could it be another reality in which, rather than luck running out, the level of play rises to match the results. Vital cogs may yet rediscover their best form.

  • Ollie Watkins could start finding the net regularly.
  • Jadon Sancho may rediscover the force he showed in Germany.
  • The defensive duo are set to come back from the treatment room, bolstering a sometimes shaky backline.

This could contain the seeds of a title challenge, however, it is improbable can continue to depend solely on one man.

Relishing the Unlikely

Yet, this is a surprise. Nobody thought the team would occupy in a Champions League place in December. And most definitely two months ago, nobody thought Rogers as the year closed would be leading a hunt for the title and appearing as an essential England player.

This winning streak must be cherished exactly since it appears so improbable. As Rogers faced the Villa faithful after the match orchestrating the applause, he appeared to be thoroughly enjoying it. Which he fully merits. These runs of form are uncommon in the sport and must be appreciated.
