Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of his move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
